Position Summary: The Public and Media Relations Coordinator independently researches, identifies and delivers compelling story hooks, narratives and experiences that magnify key brand messages and communicate the value of JCCC to a variety of audiences, including the media, community contacts, area influencers, campus community and area higher education professionals.
They work with the Director of Strategic Marketing Planning to develop a strategic public relations plan to drive earned media mentions. They collaborate with others on the marketing team to define and pursue an approach that supports the College’s mission, vision, values and strategic goals. They identify campus initiatives, achievements and student stories that can act as proof points to build a broad understanding of JCCC and its value in the community.
Required Qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree in public relations, marketing, communications, journalism, English, or related field from an accredited four-year college or university
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience working in public relations, content creation, media or similar in a business or educational environment
• Demonstrated experience handling public relations and outreach activities
• Strong writing skills that prioritize clarity and plain language
• Knowledge of Associated Press style guidelines
• Experience building positive relationships with others in the workplace, particularly those who work in different disciplines and departments
• Demonstrates excellent verbal and presentation skills; comfortable with public speaking
• Ability to write about a variety of topics and subjects in a way that appeals to the reader, whether they’re a member of the media or the public
• Ability to work under pressure, turn work quickly and honor established deadlines
• Strong attention to detail and a concern for quality. A self-starter who can manage a variable personal workload with minimal supervision
• Comfortable working effectively in a hybrid work environment
• Exhibits outstanding professionalism, judgment, and integrity
• Experience with media monitoring software
Preferred Qualifications: • Experience working in higher education
• Familiarity with video recording, editing and production
• Experience working with Kansas City area media outlets
• Experience providing media coaching and training to leaders and executives
• Experience using content management systems, email marketing systems and project management systems
• Crisis management training and/or experience

Position Details: Job duties include but are not limited to:
- Build relationships with JCCC leaders and other internal stakeholders like members of the staff and faculty to identify and deliver achievements, student stories, events and other topics to the media. Create media alerts, releases, pitches and other communication to positively shape external perceptions of JCCC as an education provider, educational and cultural resource and valuable community partner.
- Develop relationships and manage communication with journalists and other influencers to drive awareness of JCCC and its many offerings in pursuit of the best possible editorial coverage in print, broadcast and online media. Maintain an organized and accurate list of public relations contacts. Identify and work with campus subject matter experts to craft quotes and satisfy requests for interviews.
- Create, release and track the effectiveness and reach of public relations tactics, including media releases, media alerts, story pitches, outreach activities, special events, sponsored content, etc.
- Work with others on campus to coordinate select special events like open houses and media visits that can act as media hooks, drive media mentions and expand the community’s understanding of JCCC, its brand, and its offerings.
