Position Summary: Assist the Editor-In-Chief in building The Messenger, a new a student-focused multimedia publication about life at JCCC. The Managing Editor: plans editorial content with staff, under the direction of the Editor in Chief; conducts regular budget and editors’ meetings to plan content and monitor progress; assigns story and production tasks to respective Student News Center staff; sets deadlines accordingly; serves as spokesperson for The Messenger in EIC's absence.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School graduate or equivalent required.
  • Must be enrolled in at least nine (9) credit hours at JCCC each semester and maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA.
  • Successful completion or concurrent enrollment in Jour 122, Reporting for the Media. (Transcript required if not taken at JCCC).
  • Must demonstrate writing/editing skills. (Applicant may be given a writing test during interview.)
  • Knowledge of media types (print, video, social media, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience on a student publication valuable, but not necessary.
  • Knowledge of Associated Press style a plus.
  • Completion of a minimum of six (6) hours of college-level English or journalism courses.
  • Previous supervisory experience.
  • Ability to lead a team in achieving goals.

Position Details: Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Writes regular personal column and is prepared to create and/or edit stories and content as needed.
  • Monitors story assignment progress, deadline adherence and content produced by staff, then approves and posts content in a timely fashion.
  • Conducts regular staff meetings to build a foundation of teamwork.
  • Hires Student Media Center staff with assistance of coordinator.
