Position Summary: Tutor students in various Mathematics courses taught in Johnson County Community College. Other responsibilities include referring students to appropriate resources, assisting students with computer software and calculator skills necessary for the courses, helping with problem solving skills required in Mathematics, mentoring new and peer tutors, working in outreach programs, and other duties as requested by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in mathematics, math education, or related field including at least 21 credit hours in mathematics at the Calculus 1 level and above
  • At least 2 years tutoring or teaching experience
  • Must be familiar with graphing calculators
  • Must be able to help with computer programs and online homework platforms
  • Good communication skills, including listening with understanding and patience
  • Ability to explain concepts and solve word problems in Mathematics, both orally and in written form in a one to one or small group setting
  • Ability to tutor Calculus 2 and above

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Tutoring at a community college
  • Ability to tutor Differential Equations and/or Calculus 3

Position Details - Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • TUTOR STUDENTS IN MATHEMATICS- Help students understand concepts in various fields of mathematics and solve problems by relating to course material to what they already know, using real life examples and reviewing the math skills required.
  • REFER STUDENTS TO RESOURCES- Provide assistance to look up reliable information online as well in books.
  • ASSIST STUDENTS WITH COMPUTER SOFTWARE – Assist students using online homework tools as well as basic software such as word, excel. 
  • ASSIST IN DAILY ACTIVITIES OF THE CENTER- Provide assistance in checking out resources such as calculators and books, abide by the policies of the center, respect diversity among students and other tutors.
  • FOLLOW GOOD WORK ETHICS- Exhibit good work ethics by being reliable and dedicated.
