Position Summary:
The Custodian/Mechanic performs skilled maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of custodial equipment like buffers, vacuums, floor scrubbers, carpet extractors, etc. while also providing a wide range of custodial duties to maintain clean, orderly, and safe campus facilities. This position plays a critical role in ensuring that all cleaning operations are supported by properly functioning machinery and tools, minimizing downtime, reducing disruptions, and maintaining operational efficiency across campus facilities.
Key responsibilities include performing preventative maintenance on custodial equipment, disassemble machines to repair or replace broken parts, including cords, motors, and bearings, and ensuring that all custodial machinery operates safely and effectively. The position is also responsible for managing parts orders, overseeing custodial equipment inventory, and performing comprehensive asset management through the FAMIS system to track, maintain, and optimize the use of all custodial equipment. In addition, the Custodian/Mechanic provides recommendations to management regarding equipment replacement, or upgrades to maintain operational efficiency and uphold safety standards.
Required Qualifications:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- 3+ years of related experience.
- Completes assignments with little supervision.
- May assist less-experienced team members.

Position Details: Job duties include but are not limited to:
- Serve as the primary custodial machinery repair technician. Conduct inspections to identify maintenance and repair needs. Perform repairs and address general maintenance tasks for cleaning equipment and tools.
- Ensure proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies and promote continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices. Report any safety hazards or potential issues to supervisors.
- Replenish products and supplies in assigned areas. Notify supervisor of the need to order various cleaning supplies and equipment.
- Perform various cleaning duties across the campus, such as sweeping, dusting, mopping, vacuuming, cleaning, and sanitizing to ensure campus buildings, classrooms, offices, and common areas are well-maintained and presentable. Clean and sanitize restrooms and re-stock supplies as needed. Wipe down and sanitize windows, desks, and other surface areas.
- Empty trash and recycling receptacles and dispose of trash or debris into compactors and/or dumpsters. Bag trash for proper disposal according to established procedures.
- Clean, strip, wax, power scrub, polish, and refinish wood, linoleum, tile, and other flooring surfaces across campus. Operate various types of commercial cleaning equipment and machinery safely and effectively. Utilize appropriate cleaning agents and solutions based on the type of flooring surface.
- Assist with the setup and breakdown of campus events and meetings. Set up and take down tables and chairs and clean the event areas after attendees depart. Assist with office moves and rearranging furniture.
- Follow established safety protocols and ensure proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment, chemicals, and supplies. Ensure equipment is cleaned and stored following use.
- Promote and seek to continuously improve workplace safety and environmental practices.
- Shovel and remove snow and ice in doorways and entrances to enhance the accessibility of campus grounds for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
- Report any areas or equipment that require maintenance or repair to the appropriate personnel.
- Display a courteous attitude to enhance the positive and welcoming atmosphere at JCCC.
