Position Summary: The Student Media Staff members support JCCC mission by being responsible for the multi-platform storytelling and promotion of The Messenger, the college’s official student news website. This role offers a professional-grade laboratory environment where student incumbents apply skills in journalism, digital media production, and marketing to engage a diverse campus audience. Working within a collaborative newsroom structure, the incumbent will specialize in a specific medium—such as social media management, investigative reporting, photography, or digital design—while gaining cross-functional experience in professional media tools and AP style standards. Social media production editor: The social media production editor is responsible for content creation, branding content, news content and social media management on all social media platforms, excluding Youtube.
Social media news reporter: Relay campus news on social media through vertical video and text.
Copy editor: Oversees all proofreading and AP style adherence of all written content, which includes articles, videos and previews for podcasts and videos.
Senior photographer: Captures still and video images of news and sports on campus, while working with reporters and editors to supply images for digital stories and the print.
Senior designer and illustrator: Creates illustrations, including infographics, and other visual explainers, as well as designs print products, including fliers and the semi-annual magazine.
Video/audio editor: Uses non-linear editing software to edit raw videos, podcasts (both video and audio-only) into cohesive, timely and accessible content.
News reporter (3): Covers campus news, life and sports through features, previews, and other creative topics to engage our diverse campus.
PR/Marketing: The PR/Marketing hire will work to get the word out about The Messenger by planning events, tabling, building partnerships and collaborations with other campus organizations, and this hire will have a say in social media content.
Podcast producer: Creates content concepts for multiple weekly podcasting shows by working with Messengers editors and reporters. Also needs to be active on campus to meet with people to bring on the show.
Required Qualifications:
- High School graduate or equivalent required. Must be enrolled in at least six (6) credit hours at JCCC each semester and maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA.
- Must demonstrate writing/editing skills. (Applicant may be given a writing test during interview.)
- Knowledge of media types (print, video, social media, etc.).
- Some experience with relevant production software (such as Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, RSS feeds, etc.)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience on a student publication valuable, but not necessary.
- Completion or currently taking a minimum of six (6) hours of college-level English, design, or journalism courses.

- Content Creation & Reporting:
- Covering news, life, and sports through features and creative topics.
- Capturing still and video images for news and sports.
- Developing content for podcasts, including guest recruitment and campus networking.
- Reporting campus news specifically through vertical video and writing for social platforms.
- Digital & Visual Design:
- Creating illustrations, infographics, and visual explainers.
- Designing the layout for the magazine. Non-linear editing of audio and video footage for YouTube and podcasts.
- Creating and branding content specifically for social media platforms.
- Editorial Oversight & Quality Control:
- Proofreading and ensuring AP style adherence for all written content (articles, video captions, and podcast previews).
- Overseeing the management of content across all social media platforms.
- Meeting deadlines and ensuring content is posted in a timely fashion.
- Promotion & Outreach:
- Planning events and "tabling" to increase visibility.
- Building collaborations with other campus organizations.
- Influencing social media content to align with PR goals and getting the word out about the publication.
- Collaborative Operations:
- Participating in regular staff meetings to foster teamwork.
- Learning to use multiple media tools professionally.
- Completing story assignments as directed by the leadership team.
