Position Summary: The Fashion Merchandising and Design department at Johnson County Community College is accepting applications for an adjunct instructor in the Apparel Design and Technology program. We are seeking an instructor for the following classes:

FASH 123 – Apparel Construction I

Course Description:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to apply clothing construction principles, techniques, and skills in apparel construction. The class will use lecture, demonstration, and hands-on experience to teach the skills needed to plan and construct three garments during this class.

FASH 124 - Apparel Construction 2

Course Description:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to apply intermediate apparel construction principles, techniques and skills in the production of various garments. This continuation of FASH 123 will focus on the planning and construction of an ensemble of intermediate complexity made from muslin fitting samples, with emphasis on precise fitting alteration.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline.
  • Minimum two years of related industry experience.
  • Advanced sewing skills including working with both knits and woven materials. (portfolio/samples required)
  • Working knowledge of both commercial and industrial sewing machinery, including industrial straight stitch, industrial blind hemmer, serger, coverstitch and industrial irons.
  • Knowledge of patternmaking, draping, garment construction, fitting and alterations for apparel.
  • Written and oral communication skills.
  • Organization and classroom management skills.
  • Motivation to teach and mentor students at the college level and promote student success.
  • Ability to facilitate a positive and engaging learning environment that fosters creative and critical thinking.
  • Basic computer skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree.
  • Community involvement in organizations tied to fashion a plus.
  • Post-secondary or college teaching experience.
  • Teaching experience in Apparel Design.
  • Working knowledge of industrial sewing machinery.
