Position Summary: Tutor students in various Physics courses taught at Johnson County Community College. Other responsibilities include referring students to appropriate resources, assist students with computer software necessary for the courses, help with the basic math skills to solve problems in Physics, mentor new tutors, work in outreach programs and other duties as requested by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications:

A bachelor's degree with successful completion of a two-semester sequence of calculus based introductory physics as well as a course in mechanics and a course in electricity and magnetism
At least one year of tutoring/teaching experience
Must be familiar with laboratory techniques
Must be able to help with computer programs
Require good communication skills, including listening with understanding and patience
Ability to explain concepts and solving word problems in Physics, both orally and in written form in a one to one or small group setting

Preferred Qualifications:

Degree in physics
2 years tutoring/teaching experience

Position Details - Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • TUTOR STUDENTS IN PHYSICS - Help students understand concepts in physics and solve problems by relating the course material to what they already know, using real life examples and reviewing the math skills required.

a. explain concepts clearly

b. show students different methods of solving problems

c. help students use calculators and online software to enhance learning

d. tutor students in Engineering Physics I & II and statics, dynamics classes

e. help students understand laboratory techniques

  • REFER & AIDE STUDENTS IN PROPER USE OF RESOURCES - Provide assistance to look up reliable information online as well as in books for Physics and technical assistance

a. direct students to appropriate resources both online and in the center

b. explain to students the proper use of resources

c. assist students with computer software and calculator issues

d. help students with the use of online tools to complete assignments

  • ASSIST IN THE TRAINING AND MENTORING OF NEW TUTORS - Help new tutors learn the best practices in tutoring, the available resources in the SRC and the policies and procedures of the SRC.

a. transition new tutors into consistent and effective independent tutors

b. teach strategies to better explain commonly encountered questions and lab to new tutors

c. Assist with online homework platforms and usage of graphing programs 

  • PARTICPATE IN SRC OUTREACH & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS - Assist the SRC in outreach programs maintaining a high degree of professional preparation. 

a. Aide in programs such as Science Week, Campus Craze and other student activities

b. Participate in at least one unit of professional development per year

  • ASSIST IN DAILY ACTIVITIES OF THE CENTER- Provide assistance in checking out models and books, abide by the policies of the center, respect diversity among students and other tutors. 

a. treat students with respect and exhibit interest in helping them

b. step in when need arises to check out models and books

c. make sure that students follow the policies of the center

d. help to keep the center clean and organized

  • FOLLOW GOOD WORK ETHICS - Exhibit good work ethics by being reliable and dedicated. 

a. report on time at the center and stays the whole time according to the schedule

b. report absence in advance if possible; if not, in a timely manner so that alternate arrangements can be made
