Job Summary

Responsible for creating, editing and proofing all print-based material for the News Section of the Student Media Center publication. Actively participates in regular budget and editors’ meetings to plan student-centered editorial content. Assists in turning print stories into viable video scripts for production.


Job Duties

Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Oversees News Section assignments, monitors progress of reporters, maintains deadlines and edits and proofreads all materials. May also write stories that include beat, features and sports coverage.
  • Collaborates with Photo Editor and photographers on photo assignments to accompany news stories. 
  • Helps plan coverage of student-centered topics (including reporting, photography and graphic design/illustrations) in collaboration with Editor-in-Chief, Managing Editor and other staff. 
  • Collaborates with other editors and reporters to turn stories into viable scripts for video production. 

Duties and responsibilities, as required by business necessity, may be added, deleted or changed at any time at the discretion of management, formally or informally, either verbally or in writing. Scheduling, shift assignments and work location may be changed at any time, as required by business necessity.


Required Qualifications

High school graduate or equivalent required
Must be enrolled in at least six (6) credit hours at JCCC each semester and maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA
Must demonstrate writing/editing skills. Applicant may be given a writing test during the interview
Microsoft Word skills


Preferred Qualifications

Successful completion of or concurrent enrollment in JOUR 120 Mass Media and Society, JOUR 122 News Writing and Reporting, JOUR 127 Introduction to Broadcasting, JOUR 145 Photojournalism, and/or JOUR 227 Basic Video Production (transcript required if not taken at JCCC)
Previous experience working with a student publication
Knowledge of Associated Press style
Previous supervisory experience
