Job Summary

Provide one on one instruction in American Sign Language in the Academic Achievement Center for students who are deaf. Teach communication skills for a hearing environment to students. Use technology to help students learn and communicate. Use educational tools to assess the student’s academic level and to monitor progress. Provide instruction in the norms of college in a hearing environment. Adapt educational content and material to meet the needs of deaf students. Assist walk-in students from all disciplines with interventions and strategies to learn effectively in all content areas. Other tasks will include individualizing instruction, diagnosing learning barriers, and constructing student learning plans. May also include directing students to needed campus resources and responding to online requests for class support, as well as rectifying software issues.

 

Required Qualifications

• Master's degree in Deaf Education, Education, Reading, English, ESL, or ABE.
• Alternatively, equivalent graduate work in in one of these fields or demonstrated work experience
• Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the mission of a comprehensive community college
• Excellent communication skills
• Skill in employing Socratic (non-directive) teaching methods
• The ability to manage multiple teaching and learning activities simultaneously
• The ability to maintain high academic standards while providing a high level of support to students
• The ability to use and adapt to ever-changing educational technology
• Fluent in American Sign Language

 

Preferred Qualifications

• Certification in Deaf Education
• 1 years’ experience teaching students one-on-one.
• Experience teaching in a college learning center, math lab, or writing center preferred
• Experience teaching Deaf/Hard of Hearing students in multiple content areas, especially reading and study skills
